Transitional Kindergarten
South San Francisco Unified School District
Transitional Kindergarten
What is Transitional Kindergarten?
Kindergarten begins an exciting new chapter in the lives of children and their families and sets the tone for children’s social and academic future. With the increasingly academic nature of kindergarten, however, some parents are finding that their children are not quite ready for the pace and rigor of the kindergarten program. These children quite often have a fall birthday. The Kindergarten Readiness Act was signed into law in 2010. Under the new law, children must turn 5 years old on or before September 1 to enroll in kindergarten. This enrollment deadline change will occur over three years with the following timeline:
o November 1st of 2012-13 school year
o October 1st of the 2013-14 school year
o September 1st of 2014-15 school year and each year thereafter
The South San Francisco Unified School District is pleased to offer a transitional kindergarten program that will benefit children who need the gift of time to develop socially, emotionally, physically and/or intellectually. Transitional kindergarten is the first year of a two year kindergarten program that uses a modified curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate. Using both California Preschool Learning Foundations and state standards for kindergarten, teachers implement developmentally appropriate practices to accommodate various learning styles while integrating experiential "hands on" activities in an engaging setting. This program allows students to develop skills and concepts at their own pace and act as a bridge between a more flexible curriculum and the academic rigor of elementary school. County Superintendent of Schools, Anne Campbell recently stated, "Research shows that children who attend kindergarten readiness programs like transitional kindergarten are more likely to do well in school and attend college. Transitional kindergarten will help all our kids get the best possible start, with curriculum that is designed just for them."
Transitional kindergarten is a full day program and follows the schedule of traditional kindergarten. Enrollment in transitional kindergarten is voluntary. Parents who are interested in this program for their child may complete a registration form available at http://www.ssfusd.org, the school office and on the school website. For more information, please call your local elementary school.

Get involved with PTA
Research shows students do better when their families are involved at home and at school. Grades are higher. Test scores rise. Self-esteem grows. Schools improve.
PTA has been connecting parents to their children’s education for 115 years. It is the defining organization for parent involvement. See what it can do for you.
5 Great Reasons to Be Part of PTA
1. Be in the know. PTA helps you keep up with what is happening in your school and how you can support your child’s education.
2. Access great resources. PTA provides information on topics ranging from homework help to bullying prevention to media safety to child health and more.
3. Build relationships. PTA connects you to other families through meetings, events, and communications, and helps build a sense of community.
4. Hone your skills. PTA offers opportunities for you to expand your skills and talents to benefit children and the school.
5. Speak up. PTA can help you effectively suggest changes at your child’s school and in your community.
Our last meeting of the year will be on May 23, Wednesday at 8:00am. During this meeting we will be holding elections for the position of PTA treasurer. Please come and be involved in your child’s school!
5th Grade Outdoor Education
Outdoor Education (Science Camp) is held at Jones Gulch every year for our 5th grade students. It is an opportunity for students to learn about our environment in a beautiful camp setting. In addition to this our students develop self-esteem, self-sufficiency, and social responsibility. Not only do the students explore and learn about their surroundings, but they also work as part of a team setting up meals, cleaning the dining hall, and creating cabin skits to perform later in the week. Jones Gulch provides opportunities for new friendships to emerge while encouraging students to discover personal strengths and skills. It is a very memorable social and educational experience.

Los Cerritos Elementary Receives The 2012 J. Russell Kent Award
It is a real honor that Los Cerritos Elementary has been awarded the 2012 J. Russell Kent Award. We were recognized for our efforts and commitment to supporting all students here at Los Cerritos by implementing school wide reform and systematic signature practices.
“The San Mateo County School Boards Association initiated the J. Russell Kent Award Program in the 1980-81 school year. These awards are given to programs that are being implemented in a school district, county office of education, or in the community college district in San Mateo County.
These awards are named after the past County Superintendent of Schools for San Mateo County, J. Russell Kent. The Kent Awards process begins in the fall when districts submit applications to the San Mateo County School Boards Association. The applications are screened and evaluated by the Screening Committee using rubrics adopted by the Rubric Review Committee. The programs that successfully pass the screening are then visited by the Visitation Committee to verify the findings of the screening Committee.” By San Mateo County School Boards Association
These awards are given to outstanding and innovative programs in schools and districts across the county. Applicants must demonstrate their programs promote student success, employ a high degree of creativity, and demonstrate transferability to other districts. The teachers and staff here at Los Cerritos are committed to each and every one of our students and their success in education.
