English Language Development (ELD)

Program Overview

During English Language Development (ELD) leveling for our English learners, students have an opportunity to attain grade level academic expectations and English language support for 45 minutes (30 minutes for kindergarten) each instructional day. Students who are in ELD receive specialized instruction in the areas of grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary based on their English proficiency levels as determined by their California English Language Development Test (CELDT).

California Wonders ELD

Each student will be assessed regularly to ensure that his/her placement is appropriate and he/she is receiving instruction at their level. ELD focuses on the California English Language Development Standards in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The California English Language Development Test (CELDT) is given as an initial assessment to newly enrolled students whose primary language is not English, and as an annual assessment to English learners enrolled in kindergarten through grade twelve in California public schools.

The CELDT has three purposes:

1) To identify students who are limited English proficient

2) To determine the level of English language proficiency of students who are limited English proficient

3) To assess the progress of limited English proficient students in acquiring the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English
